CHAPTER 20

Unexpected Guest

On the second day of our honeymoon, we are once again flying, but this time we are flying back to Rome.

We did not even manage to get into bed after hanging out with Claudia for a few hours before I got the call that La Stella Danzante had been burnt down to the ground in the day I have been missing. There is nothing that can be saved; and the worst thing is that they lit it up in the middle of the night.

The club was in its most popular hours and there wasn’t much that could be done as each exit became surrounded by flames and engulfed those inside in just a matter of minutes. I wasn’t as close with any of the girls as I am with Claudia but I still saw them pretty often. I thought that by keeping them at arm’s length that I would be able to protect them. After all, the club is the closest to my home, it would be the easiest place to hit if they wanted to send a message.

I got this one loud and clear.

It’s impossible to avoid the guilt I feel that while I spent the night having fun with a friend, enjoying a show and fucking my husband - the women I had spent months, if not years protecting, were trapped inside a burning building with no one there to help them.

“Are you having a weird sense of deja vu?” Nikolai asks, the night before the phone call feels like a different life.

All of the stress, highs and lows, the lack of sleep is all adding up to create an unstable foundation for me to be able to deal with all of this. I have also had multiple phone calls from our accountant in London, but I have yet to call her back because what she has to say cannot be more important than the fact that 200 people died in a fire in my club.

This is a nightmare from whatever angle you stare at it.

“It feels like a nightmare that just keeps getting worse; one I cannot wake up from.” I rub my hands over my eyes and stare at my fingers when they come away covered in mascara and eyeshadow. I haven’t even had the time to take off my makeup.

“I will admit that things are a lot worse than I thought they were going to be when we took over, but it’s impossible not to think everything is going wrong when so many people are out to make life a living hell for us.” He holds onto my hand as he signals for the stewardess.

“Can you bring me some makeup remover?” He smiles gently at the woman, something I would not have expected from an heir like him. It makes me think of all of the previous dates I have been on where the men are constantly rude to service staff, no matter what their rank was.

“This can’t all be one massive coincidence; that everyone decided to strike all at the same time.
